Welcome to Bungaree Red Angus

"Every choice you make has en end result." ~ Zig Ziglar

Bungaree Red Angus stud is located in the flat stock farming area of the Southern Free State - where grass plains meet cloudless skies. Generations of resourceful and hard-working, pastoral families have taken a different approach to breeding cattle. We pride ourselves in producing cattle that are adaptable and suited to the harsh South African conditions. Here temperatures range from -10° to 40°C and average annual rainfall is 400mm. Production or “return on investment”, despite these tough conditions, is a key focus of Bungaree Red Angus.

Breeding Philosophy

Our goal is to provide the cattle industry with seed stock that will excel in all conditions. This has evolved over time and is based on a ‘survival of the fittest’ philosophy. We believe that cattle should not be fed maize, primarily because herbivores were created by the Lord to eat grass and are among the few creatures able to convert cellulose (or grass/veld) into protein. We also believe that our cattle should perform without being pampered, otherwise we fail to help our buyers to improve their herd genetics.

For over 30 odd years, the Bungaree Red Angus herd has been managed on a “no feeding” policy with only salt and phosphate licks as supplements. Despite this strict, low input regime the herd has received numerous awards over the years for low inter-calving periods. Our philosophy rests on the fact that the animals that are top performers on grass have a different genetic makeup to those that perform well when grain makes up a significant component of the feed.

While the notion that “bigger is better” has largely motivated the selection of cattle being imported into South Africa, we have consciously sourced genetics from breeders who have similar goals to ours; where profit per hectare is the driving force of animal selection. Cows must be bred to suit to the tough circumstances that our country experiences.

This policy is consistent with increasing public awareness of, and demand for healthy food. Discerning customers seek meat that is not hormone treated. Due to the consistent selection process we adhere to, we are confident that the genetics of those cattle maintained within our nucleus herd will become ever more relevant to the commercial cat
